Implementation Announcement

Blackboard Replacement Transition to Begin January 2010

Dear Lehigh Faculty:
In January 2010, our campus will begin a process of transitioning from Blackboard to a new course management system called Course Site.
Both Course Site and Blackboard will be available throughout the spring and summer of 2010; however, by the start of fall semester 2010, Blackboard will no longer be available at Lehigh.
Please read on for information on why this decision was made and what it means for Lehigh faculty.

Why this is happening.
Three factors contributed to the decision to phase out Blackboard and begin using Course Site.
1) Faculty and student feedback on the annual Blackboard survey has shown an increasing desire for enhanced, easy-to-use features. Course Site provides a more intuitive environment, improved grade book, enhanced discussion forum capabilities, and many other attractive features.

2) Course Site is an open-source system (powered by Moodle).  Using it will allow the University to save significantly on our annual course management system costs, savings that can be used to support other teaching and learning initiatives.

3) A transition to the newest version Blackboard system (which is very different from our current version) would have required a significant amount of time and effort on the part of faculty, students and staff--with little improvement to the user experience.

In light of these considerations, the LTS Instructional Technology Team conducted pilot tests of Course Site during the spring, summer and fall semesters of 2009. These pilot courses spanned all four colleges and included undergraduate, graduate, and distance education students. Positive feedback from faculty and students assured us that the time was right to make this transition campus wide.
For details about the pilot or for more information on this ongoing project visit: http://www.lehigh.edu/coursesite

What this means for faculty.
Because of the learning curve associated with the adoption of any new technology, LTS will host multiple opportunities to help you learn how to use Course Site.   These sessions will begin at the upcoming 'Symposium on Teaching & Learning'  and continue on in December and early January.   Additional learning opportunities will also be available throughout the Spring and Summer 2010 semesters.
-To learn more about Course Site, or to sign up for one of these sessions, visit  http://www.lehigh.edu/coursesite
-To request that a Course Site be set up for your spring class, simply complete the request form at:  https://www.lehigh.edu/lts/teams/it/sblackboard/bbrequest.shtml

Sincerely,
Bruce
