A Grouping is a collection of one or more groups. You can assign an activity, or even an entire topic area, to a specific grouping and it is invisible to all other groups and groupings. This feature is still considered experimental because the gradebook does not reflect the fact that a specific activity may only be available to a particular grouping and will show the activity as not graded in the gradebook. If you are using groupings for a graded activity, you must confirm that the aggregation method for the category or course is set to "Aggregate only non-empty grades" so that item is not counted in the aggregation method if it is not completed. If you do not use Check this setting: Gradebook >> Categories and Items >> Full View >> Aggregate only non-Empty Grades should be checked. This is the default setting for the gradebook. If you uncheck this option, then students not in the grouping for that activity will be assigned a Zero zero for that activity even though they are not able to complete it!  For a more complete discussion of Groupings, please see the Moodle documentation.
